Dec 2nd and 3rd, 2023

San Francisco, Ca

Sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission, this free workshop will begin with an intro to dance film through the work of several distinguished dance filmmakers. We will then move on to learning the basic controls of a DSLR camera (knowledge you can also apply to your cellphone filming) as well as storyboarding, framing, lighting, and camera movement.

Day 2 we will meet in a beautiful gallery space where — in collaboration with your fellow artists — you will get the chance to practice everything you’ve learned and capture some movement or choreography of your choosing.

(Scroll down for a detailed itinerary)

What to expect:

  • You will be working with other people in the workshop and experiencing what it’s like to be a director, videographer, and on-camera talent.

  • You will have optional homework between the two workshop days (finding music).

  • This workshop will not go in-depth into post-production editing, but the teacher will be available over the following two weeks for questions.

What to bring:

  • Pen and notepad to take notes

  • Cellphone or DSLR Camera of your choosing (Optional)

  • a piece of choreography (approx 60s) that you are excited to capture on film. (Optional)

Over the course of 2 days, you will get the chance to dive into the process of dance filmmaking from pre-production through production.
